Holy shit, dude.

I felt kinda dumb getting a Switch 2 day one when there wasn't really anything I was super excited for. Mario Kart, DK and Switch 1 games running better have been great, sure, but not good enough to feel like it was fully worth the price

This is the worst possible way for me to feel better about my decision

Since their announcement, I've never been interested in the 9th generation consoles, because they offer almost nothing.

5th gen: PS1, Saturn, N64
A very experimental time, either from the wacky ideas and crazy japanese stuff on PS1 and Saturn or those british guys ruling the N64.
So many hidden gems, mainly on PS1. Also revulotionary due to 3D graphics ofc

6th gen: PS2, XBOX, GameCube
Graphics like never before. Humans actually look like humans. Gaming is becoming more mainstream due to the success of PS2 and it's DVD playing capability. The experimental stuff has toned down, but you can still find all kinds of cool stuff in each platform, exclusive or not.

7th gen: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii
Wii sells like crack, many cool casual and hardcore games. PS3 and 360 evolve online gaming, now in its teen years. HD graphics allow for things never done before. Another leap in graphics, not as major, but still big. The more unique and weird stuff is more on the indie side, as most big games aren't trying many new things besides graphics, but doesnt take from the fact that there are a bunch of great ones hidden in those libraries.

8th gen: PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Switch 1
Graphics arent that different, but still noticeable. PS4 and Xbox are kinda the same from before, no really big changes besides power. Big games are very similar now (which doesnt mean their bad, i've played some BANGERS on my PS4). Wii U was cool but nintendo messed up badly with it. Thankfully Switch 1 is awesome, being portable and all of those exclusives games!

9th gen: PS5, Xbox Series X (stupid name), Switch 2
I can barely tell the differences between PS4 and PS5 graphics. Some games look the same on both. PS5 has 24 exclusives, most which have barely made any noise (shout out to Cosmic Smash VR tho, og game on Dreamcast is awesome). Xbox Series X (christ thats such a stupid name) is a good emulation machine. Besides that, i havent seen or heard anything about it. Switch 2 is the same shit but can do PS4 Pro graphics, has a worse battery life and is very expensive.

Switch 2 still has time to get better (and since its nintendo, the amount of great exclusives will only rise). PS5 and Series X have been out for 6 years and haven't had the a fraction of the impact the gens before had.
I dont think its: modern bad, old good. Nah! The switch 1 is awesome and i love my PS4! But this new gen is almost pointless.
Wtf are they going to do with the PS6 and Series X 2 besides "better graphics" ?

Feeling lucky that I picked mine up when I did. Very weird that my Desktop and Steam Deck are now both technically investments that have appreciated in value just by existing.

Definitely agree with game consoles getting less interesting/bleak. Tons of respect for indie teams and the crazy amount of work they have to put in to make games but I miss AA studios and their output a lot. Most consoles these days just feel like things you buy to play first party games and very few of those are interesting to me.

I also think that a lot of people on this site have really hit home on how memorable the experience surrounding each console was. Sony's old UIs, Nintendo's Miis, etc. I appreciate the efforts valve has made to make the Steam Deck UX feel like that but it's still missing something that I can't nail down. I don't think it's Nostalgia/"You just miss being a kid" either because I've messed around with plenty of consoles that I had no connection to as a kid and something about them just feels more interesting than what I've seen from my buddy's PS5.
Beyond a certain point, I think "Optimization" kills.
