I played 4 first, and despite trying to play FONV and 3 later, wasn't able to get into it. Not sure how much of that is just not being in the mood for the theming when I tried booting them up for the first time. 4 feels a lot less dark and depressing than the older ones, not sure if thats just me/nostalgia.
boomer take incoming but it's probably 1 followed closely by new vegas. i don't mind 3 in a "turn your brain off" kinda way; it was actually the first one i ever played so at the time i was completely entranced, whatever plot contrivances or inconsistencies there were did not matter because i was going "wow cool brotherhood outcast armour". 1 is just my favourite interpretation of the setting ever and no other game in the series matches that tone, new vegas is about as close as you get while having the more modern gameplay so I'd say it's likely the Best one, but the first time I went back and played 1 i was so blown away that it'll probably always be my personal favourite
the same as scott's, w/ the added caveat that fallout 2's writing, length and encounter design are completely intolerable to me in comparison to 1, and i also think the new vegas DLC is awful
not a series i like on the whole
I really really love New Vegas, and can appreciate 4's gameplay improvements (I just love building settlements), but after some recent playthroughs, I really think 1 and 2 are my favorite. Just genuinely good interpretation of the world, and it's really interesting to see the basis on which the later fallout games were made, at least in terms of skills, mechanics, etc.
It’s impossible for me to say anything other than New Vegas. There’s a lot I’ve loved about my time with Fallout 2 but I also have never been able to get too deep into it without something going wrong on a technical level.
NV just has everything I want in a videogame tbh. Just the right level of do what you want imsim & RPG elements intertwined.
