Recently, I've decided I wanna reduce my mainstream social media usage, to this end, I've swapped up my daily devices.
(fair warning, the images in my post are gonna be crunched!!! It's an aesthetic choice I made for my personal site when it comes to most of the images I upload there :3)
First off, I ditched my smartphone, a Google Pixel 8 Pro, for a not-as-smart flip phone that doesn't suck!
This is the ALT MIVE Style Folder, it's a Korean-made modern flip phone. Running Android 12, it lets me install any apps I want, and browse the web! I've used Android-based flip phones in the past, and they've all sucked as they ran much older versions, and the feel was awful, this thing on the other hand, is a joy to use. The keypad is nice, and if I need to type faster, tapping a text box opens a touch-screen keyboard. I've been running this as my daily device for a few weeks now, and I don't see myself going back.
It's reduced my screen-time by a good amount, mostly by being unwieldy on modern apps. I can still message people on Discord, browse Twitter, catch up on Instagram, but it's just a little slow. So it encourages me to wait until I'm at a 'checkpoint' of sorts, where I can spend time engaging with more purpose. And I won't deny, it's just cool and cute to have one of these!!!
My second every day device is this UMPC (Ultra-mobile PC) that I imported from Japan off ebay, it's the Nanote Next.
Some may know of the GPD WIN series of UMPCs, and this is quite similar. Nowhere near the power, and the battery life isn't amazing, but flashing Linux on it has made it run super smooth, and it's little power is a selling point for me. I primarily use this to browse the web, and to update my website on the go. I've started using the "Quick Updates" page on my personal site as a replacement for Twitter, at least when it comes to sharing personal life updates, and having this means I can hotspot, open it up, quickly add a new update to my site, and it's live! Given it's battery life, I usually pull it out for only 10-20 minutes at a time, and it usually lasts a whole day. I'm hoping to get a portable charger that can output enough to charge this thing, as that'd come in super handy in case I need to use it for longer sessions. The huge benefit of this thing is it's size, for the most part, I just carry this thing in my cargo pockets, and it's perfect.
I'm still working on my EDC, mostly just working on altering a small bag to fit on my belt so I can carry more stuff without strain on my shoulders (my satchel bag is heavy enough with all the art supplies I carry in it!) so all the tech is gonna rest in the hip bag when I get around to making it functional. I found a lot of this stuff as a need for me, as I'm always on the move these days. Having a flip phone means I don't get stuck on reels or twitter, and the UMPC means I can do more engaging internet stuffs on the go.
(If you wanna read more about these devices and my plans, check out my personal site!)
Does anyone else have a cool EDC? I'm curious to see what others have!
