time to see if it's still my least favourite

Star Citizen. Not even finished after like 12 years, still a top tier game. Continues to push the boundaries of what is feasible to include in a game.Star Citizen 26.webp

Ah yes, the black sheep.

I stand by that if it wasn't so drastically changed design-wise people would have liked it more. (Love the Shion avatar change up btw.)

it isn't like utterly irredeemable. there's just a lot of little things that drag it down to "firmly the least good" but it still has things going for it.

stuff like break/topple/launch going on to be further developed in the Blade games, generally very strong mecha designs (E.S's are better than pretty much all of the AGWS in the first game) and I think most characters' new outfits are good. i do think Shion and KOSMOS get it the worst in that regard though, landing the jump from 1's art style a lot more shakily than the rest. shion's is like.. good, but it doesn't really scream "scifi" like her vector uniform, which is honestly one of my favourite designs like, ever. the MWS is also significantly less cool looking than the first game which is a big part of what makes Shion's whole fit come together. i think KOSMOS just looks generally off, can't really pin it. maybe the difference in head shape? she just looks kind of less good than everyone else.

the GS campaign is a lot of mindless busywork but you can't really ignore it because there's good stuff locked behind it. even using a guide to do the ones that "matter" can feel like a chore. combat's also kind of mixed since I really don't like how much you have to Stock before you can do anything cool, just feels like it draws out each battle for little payoff. i DO kind of like how even random encounters can fuck your shit up though.

ultimately I think it's Fine, but it's wedged between two games that are Great and Incredible and you can't skip it since it's a trilogy, so it can feel like a pain to get through sometimes. playing it at release, you'd be comparing it to 1 and finding it lacking or too weird, and playing it now knowing that 3 is "the best one" can make 2 "the one you suffer through to get to the good stuff". it's an unfortunate position to be in

I agree with this 100%. Typically, I end up liking the odd one out a lot more than others in my experience. I appreciate that they tried some new stuff--and if given the full time that Takahashi wanted and it wasn't cut to just 3 games so they had to rush--I'm certain it would have been better. It's just a shame that it's The Bad One between two phenomenal games. IMO it's still better than a lot of other games in the genre, but compared to its siblings, it couldn't live up to their potential unfortunately.

It did also give us Yuki Kaijura as a composer that would go on to entirely produce 3's soundtrack so that definitely a plus.

Started playing Splitgate 2 since it entered beta last week, and it's very fun! The hype of it being basically Halo with portals is still pretty accurate, and the graphics are good, it runs decently on my brother's laptop, and it's got some cool maps. I played probably 60h of the original game back in early 2022 or 2023.

It does seem like it isn't quite as popular as the first game, which is unsettling for a brand new game (it's taking 30s to get into Arena matches and 2-3 mins to get into the unlockable fiesta playlist). I think the first game popped off at the perfect time, before Halo Infinite and in kind of a lull of live-service FPS games. Now there is way more competition, and while the game is solid and the portals are awesome, I'm not sure what will pull people away from COD, or The Finals, or Halo Infinite, or Marvel Rivals, or Overwatch 2, or Deadlock, or CS2.

I hope that if the game ends up bleeding players they flip the assets and mechanics into a singleplayer experience. Everything that's here is awesome and I'd hate to see it go to waste. using portal momentum to launch into the air and attack from above is something super unique on offer here.

Knocked out a few games over the past 2-3 weeks. Beat Deltarune, and wow was that an experience. 10/10, probably a top 5 game and we are only halfway!!

I also picked up Beard Blade and Tiny Thor to scratch that 2D platformer itch. Both were decent but not quite as much fun as most of the big names (i.e. Celeste, Meatboy, VVVVVV, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, etc.)

With that it really seems like I'm running out of 2D platformers to play, which is surprising. I've got almost 60 in my library, with another 20 or so on Switch and several on Epic. They've been my bread and butter for years, grabbing them whenever there's a steam sale. There's mayyybe 7-10 left on steam I'm interested in, but I know there have to be some weirder/less well known ones lurking in the shadows. I keep swimming through Next Fests, Fanatical, Steam sales, and humble bundles to try and find some I haven't heard of yet.

If anyone has any recommendations of good, super niche 2D platformers please let me know :)

the umamusume game finally got an english release and (with the obvious "i wish this was a regular game i could just pay for once instead of a gacha" caveat): it's a lot of fun! kinda giving me ratatouille flashbacks to when i was playing monster rancher on a gba emulator in like 2006. i think daiwa scarlet is a lot more visually appealing than like, suezo though lol

also been playing the hundred line: last defence academy. they are not kidding when they say that game might be the most insane undertaking in visual novel history. i am 75 hours in (according to steam, subtract some time i left the game running while doing other stuff) and i only have 28 out of 100 endings. please send help. (also the SRPG gameplay is actually good too)

ohhh. so it literally IS beginning its takeover of the west. ok. i thought people were just suddenly finding out about horse game all of a sudden, and i suppose that's still true, but i didn't realize this. i knew about uma musume at least three years ago. i went to japan on a school trip to do tours of game design companies, and one of the things we researched ahead of time was what games were most popular in japan. we found out uma musume was like, the biggest mobile game in the country at the time. i still don't know anything about it besides the fact that it's about horse girls that race.

i won a figure of kitasan black from an arcade machine so i guess if i ever learn anything about the franchise then i'll be rooting for her1751263355506.webp
